*STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
Inequality affects us all. In my student and professional life as a white woman, I have been fortunate to have been supervised by inspiring mentors, yet all have been white and male (n=7). This has left me with logistical and existential questions such as:
  • Should I dress like the female-equivalent of my (male) supervisors?
  • Must I behave like my (male) mentors?
  • What does success as a woman sound, look and feel like in the workforce?
Prejudice, discrimination and bias reinforces the same while stagnating progress and limiting the recruitment of new ideas. This is the antithesis of science, which by definition is about exploration, advancement and diverse perspectives. Fortunately, STEM training programs are now recognizing diversity and inclusion as a priority. Below are resources to help us as professionals and educators consider diversity and inclusion in our personal and professional lives.
